A backup on the same machine is a second copy of the thing that will be lost. These go to storage somewhere else entirely, compressed and encrypted with AES-256 before they leave the server, and every one is read back and decrypted immediately after upload — if what landed does not match what was sent, the run reports a failure rather than a success. A backup nobody has restored is a rumour.
